The Importance of a Balanced Diet to Dental Health

It goes without saying that the two most significant factors in ensuring dental health are a strong at-home oral hygiene routine and regular visits to the dentist. However, not far behind is the choices that we make in which foods and beverages we consume.

Today we’re looking at the role of a balanced diet in dental health, the foods and beverages that promote oral health, and the ones that ought to be limiting.

Which Foods Are Beneficial to Oral Health?

A diet that supports oral health is one loaded with nutrients like vitamins C and D, and calcium, each of which contributes to strong oral and overall health. Vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system, can prevent gum disease, while Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption, which supports tooth enamel and jawbone density.

In practical terms, this means a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly leafy greens, dairy, lean protein, whole grains, and nuts, especially almonds. In addition to delivering vital nutrients, these foods deliver dietary fiber, which reduces plaque buildup by stimulating chewing and saliva production.

Foods to Avoid for the Sake of Your Dental Health

As far as your dental health is concerned, what you don’t eat and drink is arguably as important as what you do.

High on the list of foods and beverages to limit or avoid are those high in sugar. This is because sugar, especially processed sugar found in treats like candies, cookies, and soft drinks clings to teeth and promotes the growth of the bacteria that causes plaque and tartar. Also important to monitor is the intake of especially acidic foods and beverages, like citrus fruits and juices, coffee, and, again, soft drinks, as, over time, the acids they contain can erode tooth enamel.

If these foods and drinks are prominent in your diet, we’d encourage moderation in their consumption and brushing your teeth soon after consumption.
