Routine dental exams and professional teeth cleanings are essential to maintaining the health of your teeth, gums, and oral cavity. Our mouths need to be healthy and disease-free to function correctly and keep our general wellness in balance.

Oral and whole-body health are linked and can significantly influence the other. For example, untreated gum disease can lead to infections that can enter the bloodstream and result in a heart attack or stroke. People with diabetes and autoimmune diseases are at a higher risk of developing gum disease and dry mouth.

Here are some diseases and health concerns we can prevent or manage with routine dental exams and cleanings:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gingivitis
  • Periodontitis
  • Oral cancers

Early diagnosis through dental exams can also sometimes determine health concerns, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Anemia
  • GERD
  • Intense stress
  • Osteoporosis
  • Dementia
  • Heart disease
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

The American Dental Association recommends getting dental exams and professional teeth cleanings every six months. However, some patients with particular medical concerns or gum disease may require more frequent check-ups.

What to Expect at a Dental Check-Up

During a routine dental exam, your dentist checks for signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancers, dental damage, and more. We may also use digital x-rays and intraoral cameras to get a detailed view of your mouth.

A professional teeth cleaning allows the dental team to thoroughly remove plaque and bacteria from tooth surfaces, between teeth, and along the gumline. Patients with gum disease may receive root scaling and planing treatment to remove bacteria from gum pockets and maintain gum tissue plasticity.
